The Institute of Aerospace Propulsion(IAP)takes solid rocket propulsion, liquid rocket propulsion, combined cycle propulsion and space propulsion as the research objects, and focus on the study of combustion, flow, thermal protection, advanced design, refined simulation, advanced testing technology, Energetic material, Electric propulsion, multidisciplinary optimization, etc.
IAP gathers first-class resources in aerospace propulsion technology, formed a first-class research team, formed a combining research pattern of basic theoretical, key technology and engineering applications, as well as a mature scientific and technological achievements transformation mechanism. IAP has produced a batch of world-class achievements on aerospace propulsion, and has become a first-class aerospace propulsion research institute with a certain international influence.
IAP has a long history and excellent heritage. IAP history can be traced back tothe rocket engine section of the Missile Department, which established in 1959. At the very early the section had two teaching and research sub-sections on liquid rocket engine and solid rocket engine. Since 1977, the section mainly focus on solid rocket engines. In 1961, it began to recruit graduate students, and was approved for master station in 1982, PhD. station on “Rocket Engine” in 1986 by the State Council's Academic Degrees Office, and in 1990, China’s first PhD. on rocket engine was awarded. With the reform of schools and colleges, the Department of Aerospace Propulsion Technology was built in 2003 and the IAP established in 2016.
Now, IAP has 50 faculty members, including 15 professors, 21 associate professors, including 2 national experts and 3 national talent titles. There are 3 academic degree authorization disciplines in Aerospace Propulsion Theory and Engineering (National Key Discipline), Engineering Thermo-physics and Weapon Science and Technology, and 2 professional degree authorization disciplines in Mechanical Engineering and Energy and Power Engineering.
IAP has advanced and complete scientific research facilities, including 1 national key laboratory, 2 provincial and ministerial collaborative innovation centers, 4 national innovation teams, and 2 provincial and ministerial innovation teams. In recent years, it has won 2 national awards, 9 provincial and ministerial awards, 11 textbooks and monographs published, and more than 100 authorized patents. It is in an advantageous position in China in terms of solid rocket motor design technology, basic and applied basic research related to the working process of solid rocket motors, and rocket based combined propulsion.
IAP has cultivated a large number of industry leaders and technical talents for aerospace propulsion industry. More than a thousand outstanding talents graduated in the past 60 years, and they have made outstanding contributions for the aerospace propulsion industry.
